A Landscape Photographer’s Journey into the Wild
Wildlife Photos of 2021 – In previous years, I’ve usually wrapped up my photography season by sharing my favorite landscape images. That’s where my roots are—as a dedicated landscape photographer, chasing light and dramatic scenes across Oregon and beyond. However, as I looked through my 2021 portfolio, something unexpected stood out.
More and more of my work is beginning to include wildlife photography.

How It Started
For many years, I focused almost exclusively on landscapes. My energy went into finding beautiful scenes and sharing them through my lens. Along the way, of course, I’d occasionally cross paths with wildlife. But I didn’t always have the gear—or the mindset—to take full advantage of those moments.
That started to change, especially during my travels in Alaska, where wildlife is everywhere. I realized I was missing opportunities. That’s when I made the decision to take wildlife photography more seriously, and I began carrying a long lens whenever I headed into the field.

The Gear That Made a Difference
I now shoot wildlife with the Tamron 150-600mm G2, and I’ve been thrilled with its performance. All of the images in this collection were captured using that lens. If you’re a landscape photographer considering branching out, I highly recommend learning the techniques and investing in gear that will let you capture those surprise encounters.

These Photos Aren’t Perfect—And That’s OK
None of these photos are National Geographic quality—but they’re mine, and I’m proud of them. Each image carries a story, a moment in time, and a step forward in my journey as a photographer. They remind me of the places I’ve been and the adventures I had while photographing these amazing animals.
For me, growth in photography comes not just from capturing the perfect shot, but from learning and improving with each experience. These wildlife photos represent a turning point, and they prepare me for the day when that Nat Geo moment finally happens.
