Because I’m a landscape photographer, I’m prone to seek adventure in the outdoors, sometimes I can be found in the middle of nowhere in the dark photographing the night sky. It’s a common part of my life but it’s not for everyone. It’s certainly not something that my 82-year-old mother does.
In the little settlement of Bakkagerði, there is a colony of Atlantic Puffins that you can sit with at a close distance. The village has a colony of over 10,000 mating pairs that nest there from April to mid-August.
There have been two birds that have eluded my lens. The large pileated woodpeckers are always teasing me from the trees with their jungle call. The second one, unbelievably, was the little native rufous hummingbird.
Grizzly bears are fearsome creatures. They are the apex predators in their environment and when we, as humans armed with nothing more than a camera and some bear spray, enter their environment we are at a distinct disadvantage.
The Northern Lights have always fascinated me. When I was a little boy, I was curious about Alaska. I enjoyed reading Jack London books. White Fang and Klondike Tales, To Build a Fire was my favorite story.
We were invited as guests to attend a Pow Wow at Simnasho on the Warm Springs Reservation in Central Oregon by Charles and Vicky. They offered to let us stay in Charles’s Medicine Lodge, a beautifully decorated Plains Indian style tepee Darlene and I were quick to take them up on their kind offer and it turned out to be an experience that would change our lives.
Winter finally made it to Oregon and 2024 came in like a lion weather-wise. We had high winds, ice, snow and temps near 0°F.
