Fall color in Oregon at Lost Lake

Fall Color in Oregon at Mount Hood

Fall color in Oregon at Lost Lake is truly a sight to behold. Nestled on the north side of Mount Hood, Lost Lake becomes a painter’s palette of color each autumn. For me as a landscape photographer, it’s one of those places that never disappoints—especially when the vine maple trees (Acer circinatum) begin their seasonal show. Lost Lake is an Oregon icon and a visit there is a must.

These native maples are some of the most striking contributors to Oregon’s autumn scenery. In the shady understory of the forests, the leaves often turn a glowing golden yellow. Higher up, where sunlight hits them more directly, the same trees can shift to deep oranges and brilliant reds. This stunning variation in color is part of what makes photographing fall in the Pacific Northwest so special.

I took this photo during one of my frequent trips to Lost Lake, a favorite location of mine for both its scenic beauty and peaceful atmosphere, and it’s very close to my home. I’ve visited this spot many times, but autumn brings a unique kind of magic. The still lake, the dramatic view of Mount Hood, and the layers of colorful foliage combine to create classic Oregon scenes that people travel from all over to witness.

If you’re ever looking for a place to experience the best fall color in Oregon, Lost Lake belongs high on your list. And if you’re a photographer, the opportunities here are endless—reflections, backlit leaves, and quiet forest trails just waiting to be explored. And at night the stars are amazing.
